HistoryWorthiness, trustfulness, and honor were the founding principles of Sigma Tau Epsilon, founded on the University of Washington campus in December 1926. Ray Miller was elected president in January, and purple and white were the fraternity colors. A diamond-shaped badge also was adopted, and by the end of January a simple ritual was written. Upon the approval of Sigma Tau Epsilon’s petition to Phi Kappa Tau, April 6, 1929, was set for the installation. The ceremonies concluded with an installation ball at the Olympic Hotel. In 1940 the chapter purchased the former Pi Beta Phi sorority house on Seventeenth Avenue and converted it into a fraternity home. The chapter operated during World War II through the 1942–43 school year, when an alumnus began to manage the house as a home for war workers in the area. Six men reopened the chapter in March 1946. After the war, the membership exploded, and the house proved to be too small. In 1954, the chapter was able to buy the former Alpha Gamma Delta sorority house, which was in good condition and suited to the chapter’s needs. The house has served Alpha Pi well since that time. After a reorganization in the early nineties, the fraternity quickly regained prominence on the University of Washington campus and within a couple years performed an extensive remodel project on the entire chapter house. Unfortunately, major risk management violations were discovered during a chapter social event in 1998 which resulted in a University imposed 4 year departure from the campus. Faced with the possibility of three years without incoming funds, it was decided to sell the chapter house to Pi Kappa Alpha in order to retire the outstanding debts from the remodel project. In September of 2003, Phi Kappa Tau national officers came to the University of Washington to start the re-colonizing process. The colony was installed in late November 2003, after a Building Men of Character weekend retreat. The colony, after a lot of hard work and fun times, was chartered on April 2nd, 2005. After a short time living with another fraternity, Alpha Pi moved into its current location where we here at Phi Kappa Tau have an established presence at the University of Washington with a successful Philanthropy Project that raised thousands of dollars in its initial year! Expect great things from Phi Kappa Tau as the legacy continues. Check out the Alpha Pi Chapter's Wiki |
